Arbatax - Arbatax
Barreda finishes second, Goncalves consolidates top ten position
Joan Barreda showed on Wednesday during the penultimate day of the Sardinia Rally what a special talent he is.
The 28-year-old Spaniard bounced back from his previous brake problems to finish the loop around the seaside town of Arbatax in second place. Barreda overcame the handicap of a bad starting position (20th) and was only beaten by overall race leader Jordi Viladoms.
The third round of the FIM Cross Country World Championship continued on Wednesday under hot weather conditions. Barreda found his rhythm quickly, as he powered his flawlessly working Husqvarna TE 449 through the narrow and technical challenges of the special test, underlying his nickname "Hurricane". Said the quick and likeable Iberian at the finish: "We have a very winding and technical course in this race. That requires a lot of experience. I´m happy I found my rhythm right away. The overall podium would have been possible, but the time penalty I received is too costly. It´s an excellent roadbook practice with all these navigational instructions shortly one after the other. It´s a preparation race for the Dakar, even if it´s very different."
Paulo Goncalves, Barreda´s teammate at the Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain, experienced a mixed day. He started from ninth position, and that´s where Goncalves still sits following a 12th place in Wednesday´s special test. The Portuguese eventually pushed a little too much. "Mistakes happen when you´re giving 100 per cent. You can miss the correct way within the blink of an eye. A couple of metres on the wrong track and you loose precious time to compensate. I will attack on Thursday´s final tests and hope to gain some ground. I want to stay in reach of the top three in the world championship."
The closing day of the Sardinia Rally takes the riders back to San Teodoro. The special tests have a length of
33 km and 45 km.
